Whati is life?

This nice video points to an important question. It is very easy to tell life from death, but it is very difficult to give a definition. It is commonly held that life = DNA, but DNA is obviously dead stuff, and this rises the questions discussed in the video. In my opinion life is a system that is able to repair itself. A cell is life, a virus is dead but a virus in a cell is living, and when we will make software that repairs itself we wouldl have created a rudimentary but perfectly working artificial life. Evolution itself arises from the errors made in the process of self-reparation. Information is not life (information is in everything). Information that creates new information is life.

Of course this idea is by no means new. It is the idea of "autopoieitc machine" of Maturana and Varela, of Morin, and can be traced even to Marx, that said that men are beings the produce themselves (in the economical-phylosophical manuscripts).

Zealots in time

In the I century a.C. zealots fighted the Roman Empire in Plaestine. The Roman Empire ruled with the help of upper classes in the Provinces. Chrsitian were inspired by social and political dieas of the zealots, but mixed them up with exoterism and religion. The zealots eventually were defeated and disappeared, but the Crhsitina won. Today we have USA that rules a world Empire with the help of the upper classers of the Provinces (for instance the rulers of European countries), we have the left that fighted this Empire and seems to have been defeted, and the conspiracy theorists that mixed up the ideas of the left with religion, UFOs and exoterism.

Ripresa

Jesus, the zealot?

Terrorsim in Palestine has a bimillennial history. The zealots, that fighted for the liberation of the Jews from the Roman Empire, were the terrorists of that time. They had a strong commitment to social justice, and were rather integralistic concerning religion, not differently from Hamas.
Although the Gospel states that the Christian message is definitively spiritual ("My kingdom is not of this world" and many other passages), it is obvious that Jesus sympathized for the Zealots, and like the Zealots wanted the Jews to be freed of the Romans. I think that he didn't mix too much with them not for spiritual reasons, but for differences in strategy. The Zealots dreamed of going back to an independet kingdom of Israel, but the Christians warned that it was impossible to concentrate on Israel without considering the broader picture. In other wors, the liberation of Israel was impossible without the destruction of the Rome. The Book of Revelation is just about this (the Beast is the Roman Empire).

Zealots rose up a few years after the death of Christ, but failed and Jerusalem was destroyed in the 70. The Christians wiated longer, but ultimately they conquered Rome in the IVth century. All this is represented in classical paintings of the Nativity, where a broken column or temple is always present, meaning that Jesus destroyed the Ancient World, both spiritually and politically.

English in transformation

English today is much an isolant language, like Chinese, with uninflected words that are simply justaposed to obtain meaning. But it is more and more changing, since in collioquial speech, at least of less educated peoeple, entire phrases are pronounced as an entire word. There is a possibility that this will lead to something like an agglutinating language (Turkish, Finnish).

Is the evolutionary path of languages from flexive languages (German)  to isolant to agglutinating?

Truth (a politician never tells lies)

Contrary to a common opionion, politicians nether tell lies. They either 1) say something that means somenthign else; 2) use double-meaninig phrases (a variaint of the former); 3) or, more often than not, they don’t say. In other words, they carefully hide the truth, but always tell the truth, sincetruth is knowledge,  knowledge is power, and politicians make a living  on power.  Of course there are specialized technicians that put smoke in the eyes of the people: experts, scientistsi, economists. They are well paid for this taks; but they are definitively not politicians.

Immigrazione

Alfabetizzati e analfabeti (Germania e Italia)

Žizek and Calvinism

This video changed my mind about Žizek- When he talks about Hegel and Marx and Lacan I see only irritiating jokes. Here I see dialectic, and a profound critique of Protestantism, that is at the very heart of the anglo-saxon vision of the world that in is the very foundation of imperialism and capitalism. In a nutshell, he says that Calvin is right in saying that things are necessary, you cannot purchase your fate as believed by catholics, but that the world was not created once and for all time, adn that his history is wirtten in an ever-lasting book in the mind of god, but is endlessly recreated at each moment. Anyway, I don’t know if he is aware that Buddhism says more or less the same thing.

Looking over one's shoulder

A politician said that the only way to know who is stabbing you in the back is to look at the reflex in the eyes of  who is in front of you. It is a beautiful quote, since it invites to use the others as a mirror, which is always a good advice. Nonetheless, and contrary to the appearence, this wiity public man was a very bad politician. In fact, a good politician (or a good soldier, it's the same, politics is war) is perfectly skilled in looking over his shoulder and always looks over his shoulder. But this works only if you are commited to a cause and are completely unselfish. Otherwise, it doens't work The paradigm of treason - Judas - was in fact unmasked in advance, and his treason succeeded only because it had to succeed. In other words, contrary to the common view, politics is not filth. A good politician must be astute as a snake (and strong as a lion), but also pure a s a lamb. Unluckily, good politicians are extraordinarily rare - I dare say that you have a better chance to find one in your life outside the governments and the parliaments.

Capitalismo

Education

Beauty is truth, truth beauty, - that is all
Ye know on earth, and all ye need to know.

Since centuries and up to a few years ago, élites received classical education, whereas technical education was reserved to people with executive tasks. Classical education was essentially based on the understanding of what is beauty, because without this, understanding truth is also impossible – as the famous lines of Keats’ stress. Sensibility, in fact, is a powerful allied of reason in order to make sense of things. In the middle ages this faculty was named sidneresis.

In ancient times and up to the XIX century this meant reading Homer and Vergil, but after the Romantic revolution, the model of beauty changed: French and Russian novels became the paradigm of taste and discernment for educated people. Today nobody reads Victor Hugo, Dumas, Stendahl, Tolstoj. And this resulted in the aesthetical collapse of this time of greed, robbery, carelessness. But I think that something will change in short time, and this is surprisingly due, possibly, to the web. I think in particular to the series Breaking Bad, that rages among the youngsters. It is full of imperfections, it is obviously very pop, but in some way it has the breath, the care for detail, the visual and spiritual beauty that is the mark of the French and Russian masterpieces. A young friens of mine is convinced that this is the new paradigm - maybe..

Science and Religion

I don't like religion, I understand all too well that this video is against the fundamentalist obsession for religion so widespread in America, but this nice guy probably doesn't realize that when he says that science has superseded the Bible and the Coran he affirms that in some way science is the religion of our time. And taking science as a religion is the sorrowest betrayal of science.

Spread a 528

A laughter will bury you all

Anarchists say: "a laughter will bury you all": Of course, before them all must die, and here opinions diverge. Communists think that it would be better to kill them, or at least to make theyr death easier, whereas anarchist believe overall that it is better to let them die by themselves. Who is right?

By the way, there is a Jew saying that says that the world will end in the smile of a wise.

Materialism

It is amazing that radical christian groups, that hate Darwin, whose book "The origin of the Species" ends with the hihgly spiritual words "There is grandeur in this view of life, with its several powers having originally breathed from the Creator into a few forms or into one; and that (...) from so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful and most beautiful have been, and are being evolved" - at the same time as a rule support capitalism, perhaps the most materialistic way of life of all history.

Contraddizioni

Mimesis (understanding imagination)

We thought that art had to do with representing nature – or expressing feelings - and we found out that it concerns imaginations. Should we understand art, perhaps we could understand imagination. Philosopher investigated the first question for centuries with unequal success, and we are astronomically far away from even framing the second.

Francis Bacon (the ancient master of the moderns)

Francis Bacon is an autodidact. He learned to paint studying the ancient masters, whose techniques he master wonderfylly, and this is probably a his biggest strenght, since he is fully contemporary and yet he paints like an ancient.

autodisciplina

Maggioritario in tilt

Quello che lui percepisce come realtà è quello che a me appare come bellezza classica - del resto truth is beauty and beauty is truth.

MAAM-MAXXI

When Walter Veltroni created the MAXXI, he watned to create the Roamn ewuivalent of the Beaugourg. The operation failed, not only because, after having spent billions to build the building,. They had no more money to buy the art to put into the container, but mainly because museum of modern art are daramatically different from museum of classic art. Museum of classic art are collections, with the objective of displaying the history of art, of simply for the amusement of the visitors. A museum of contemporary art is mainly a place wher the artistic world meets – artists but also critics, collectionists, the public. And nobody meets in the MAXXI, apart from families with little children.

The failure of the MAXXI was the first idea that catched my mind when I visited the MAAM, a strange museum in a squat in an abandonend factory in the suburbs of Rome. Here there are 400 pieces of art – and here the artistic world of Rome meet, and the context is not designed by an archistar but is new and fascinating like the Beaubourg when it was build in the 80’s.

But why MAAM succeded where MAXXI failed? The problem is that only the king can found big institution of art – like the Uffizi, the Louvre and the Beaubourg. In Rome, the last king was Tarquinius the Superb (apart from Totti), and the power passed to the Senate and the People of Rome (Senatus populusque romanus). The Senate is the church, and the people is .. the people. And the people of Rome is the people of the suburbs, the people that occupied the abandoned factory and that has the power to commit artists to embellish his dwelling.

The people of the MAAM like to compare their effort to the artistis of Mediaeval cathedral. They say so because they reject the artist as god that arose in the XVIth century and became so annoying in the XXth, but the art of the cathedrals was for the glory of god. When I walk the rooms of the MAAM I feel more like in the Vatican Stanzas, and it is no case that one of the paintings is named “La Cappella Porcina” (The Swines’ Chapel). Michelangelo Pistoletto, in a video, thinks to something like the “Soziale Plastik” (this is not suprising, he deruives from Beuys), but here again I think there is a misunderstanding: here the squatters are not like Beuys, they are more like Peggy Guggenheim (the home of Peggy Guggenheim in Venice reminds strongly the MAAM).

It is perhaps surprising that such an enterprise occurs in a period where market and money are the only legitimate power and political power is scowled at; but perhaps not.

Starbucks

Loops, ecosystems and indicators

What is the difference between ecosystems and other systems? The main difference is that in ecosystems feedbacks are present. Ecology deals with a disparate array of things: flow of matter and energy, bioclimate, niches, population biology, competition, evolution, food webs, macroecology, but I am convinced that the unifying concept is that of feedback. Other systems can be very complex, but they present no loops. An exception is perhaps economy, where a few feedbacks are present.

It is often not realised that when you have a causal loop, like in the figure, you can do no statistics and even any quantification is difficult

In fact you cannot have differet fixed levels of A in order to study the relationship AB; when you increase A f a quantity g, it will increase a larger (or a lesser) quantity g + h due to indirect relationship via C.

But there is a way to turn around this problem. If you have a causal branch in the network that ends in D, measuring D you can asses the state of the loop ABC. The element D is an indicator. Ecologysts often frown at indicators they are reductionist, and they believe that elements indirectly related to a system are unimportant.  And yet indicator are the only way to quantify the elements of the system when loops – i.e. feedbacks – are present. The usual method is to build a reasonable model and to compare the prediction with the patterns observed. The problem is that the number of models that are compatible with observation is usually immense. Moreover, history of science teach us that often scientific laws are not reasonable –  it is neither intuitive nor reasonable that the sub turns around the earth, it seems exactly the opposite.

But I am afraid that it will take much untile ecologists will recognize that they look at ecosystems the worng way. Think for a moment to the successful theories in ecology, like island biogeography, they always concern systems without loops. The problems begin when you have loops.

Antipolitica

Mithraism

I visited recently the National ROman Museum of Rome and I paused longly in front of the low reliefs of Mithra with the ritual killing of the bull. Mithra kills the bull with a knife, and a scorpion pricks his testicles whereas a dog and a snake lick his blood. On the left and the right there are two boys holding a torch. one with the torch upright and the other wit the torch dowright. On the upper side there are the sun and the moon and a crow. I was pondering that Taurus and Scorpio are opposite in the zodiac, and are among the most brilliant costellation. Is it possible that the tauroctony is a representation of the sky? I went back home sure to have done a big discovery and alas! A rapid research on Wikipedia showed that it was proposed 20 years ago by Ulansey. This brilliant reseracher says that Mithra represent the precession of the equinoxes, and that the mithraeum is a representation of the sky from above (this is attested by ancient authors). Therefore the initiation to mythraism made the adept - probably - able to fly above the sky of the fixed stars, in a manner similar to that described by Plato in the Phaedrus (and also as experinced much later by Dante in his journey to Paradise). In this way the interpretation of the main lines of mithraism is relatively straightfowrard (although of course the spiritual experinece of the adept is not).

I have - perhaps - just a little contribution to give to this nice interpretation. it is said that Mithra was identified with Ophiucus. In my opinion it was Orion, that is much more brilliant and reminds strongly the shape of Mithra.

Darwin and von Humboldt

I discuss agian the interesting paper on Nature about the determinants of productivity.  I discuss it again since it is very good science, and yet the interpretation is flawed by philosophical biases that are not fully recognized.

The paper says that productivity is directly related to size and age and indirectly related to climate. I said in the previous post that indirect relationship are considered not real by ecologists. It took much time in law to ackowledge that indirect responsability are as real as direct responsabilities. But there is another consideration, this time concerning the history of science. We have two main schools in ecology: the German and the anglo-saxon. German school was founded by Alexander von Humboldt, anglo-saxon school by Darwin. The German school focuses on the relationship betwwen the physical environment and the organisms, whereas the anglo-saxon school tries to explain ecosystems relying only on organisms. Representatives of the German school often define their appraoch as "holistic", but this word makes little sense; what matters is emphasis on the physical environment.

The above papers shows that both the physical environment (the climate) and the organisms (size and age) play a role in productivity. The physical environment has only indirect effect. but this is trivial, since the effect of environment on ecosystems is always mediated by organisms. And yet you have not the full explanation if you do not consider the physical environemtn. Organisms are immersed in the environment, and are shaped by it, although of course a very relevant part of their life are organism to organism relationships (as stressed by Darwin in the Origin of Species).

But anglosaxon think generally that the German approach is unscientific, and anglo-saxon are hegemonic. Therefore climate cannot be a determinant of productivity.

Indirect relationships

It seems that chicken can count up to 3. But ecologists seem to be able to count only up to 2. Consider the following diagram.

In the seqeunce above, AB and BC are direct relationships, whereas AC is an indirect relationship. You need to know the two direct relationship to accurately model the sequence of relationships, but you need to take into account indirect effects, i.e. the complete picture, in order to understand the system. If you consider only part of the system, you  explain nothing. If I pay a killer and the killer kills you, the judge will condemn me, and the killer to a lesser punishment. But ecologists think tha indirect relationship do not exist. They will codnemn only the killer, not the instigator. Consider for instance this interesting paper on Nature about the determinants of productivity. It says that productivity is directly related to size and age and indirectly related to climate. This is a major insight, since it retrieves the killer and the instigator. But in the paper the indirect relationship is considered in some way unreal.

Ecologists are slowly recognizing that often different factors are at play at the same time. But they accept only parallel chains of caustions, like that below in the diagram, and not series of causation like that below. But "closer" does not mean "stronger". In the chain above, if the rate of AB is slower than the rate of BC, the bottleneck is AB and not BC. We should consider the complete picture, and stress not the "closer" or the stronger relationship, but the bottlenects. In the case of parallel systems this is slowly getting recognized (consider for instance this paper on Ecology Letters)

Sanfedismo

Lì, li dissero: ladri usciti dalle tane,
ma non portaron via nemmeno un pane;

Correlation is not causation

Correlation is not causation, as we often repat, but correlation is nonetheless always informative.

If you detect a correlation between A and B only three possibilities exist:

Only the first case is true correlation, but from the above graphic it is evident that also cases 2 and 3 allow to analyse the structure of data, once the factors C and D are discovered.

Case 2 is spurious correlation. But if you find C you have a model.

Case 3 is indirect correlation. In this case A and B are proxies or indicators of C and D, and can be used interchangeably. Often A and B are easier to measure than C and D.

It has been observed a drop in explanatory power in ecological studies in recent year. This is probably because we don't take into account the above very general patterns.

Structural Equation Models (SEM) allow to study the three cases, but unfortunately they can deal only with linear relationships.

Ut pictura poesis

I always wonder at the abyss of my ignorance. I did not know the saying "ut pictura poesis" - famous at is can be. It is finely discussed in the english version of wikipedia. The idea has been widely criticized. In a previous post I reversed the statement, referring to contemporary art, and I don't know if it is more tenable in this form.

In conclusione

Feelings

I said that McEwans's novel "Enduring love" was illuminating. But it was illuminating in a dialectical way. In fact. not even a statement in the novel is true, and not even a feeling is deep. False conceptions and shallow felleing is the mark of middle class - but it is rarely so well described. Morevoer, if a false thesis is well presented. it is easy to find its anthitesis.

The main idea udnerlying the novel is that feelings and reason are at odd. This doesn't correspond to my experience. True skepticals are  wam and passionate - read the character of Socrates in Plato dialogues. And proletrians, thouth ardently passionate, are very clear-minded (see my previous post ). Although feelings can obscure reason (and reason repress feelings) there is no fundamanetal contradiction between the two, Only with a bad disposition of mind we can garble them. It is like right and left hand in knitting - the coordination is dificult and sometimes we make mistakes, but we don't claim that there is a fundamental contraditiction between left and right hand.

When I was a chid I often wondered "why feelings exist?" When I touch the fire I feel pain - but why? Why this long chain fire -> pain -> retreat? Would it not be simpler and faster fire->retrat? Thanks to the misunderstandings of McEwan I understood that we learn also with feelings. We learn through mental representations. These representations can be verbal, visual, and also made of feelings. Feeling representations are probably most primitive, and are present also in many animals, but for this very same reason they are also powerful and somtimes irreplaceable.

Enduring love

I have read McEwan's novel "enduring novel". I don't know if it is a great novel, but it is illumianting. Its core meaning is science and rationalism as religious (metaphysical) justification of the bourgeois way of life. I dare say that the meaning of my life - if life has a meaning - is that the burgeousis way of life and all the bourgeouis way of thinking are agains reaston. Today this means a rather solitary lfie, since we have married the bourgeois way of life with irraionalism.

I report an excerpt of the novel:

" We live in a mist of half-shared, unreliable perceptions, and our sense data come warped by a prims of desire and belief, which tilted out memories too. (...) Pityless objectivity, especially about ourselves was always a doomed social strtegy, We're descended from the passionate, indignant tellers of half truths  that in order to convince others, simultaneously convinced themselves. (...) This is why there re divorces, border diputes and wars, and this is why this statue ofthe Virgin weeps blood and that one of Ganesh drinks milk. And that was shy metaphysics and science were such curageous etrprises (..) huma artifacts set against the grain of human nature Disinterested truths".

This is a surprendent example of self-convinced half-truths: we ebguile ourselves, but is necessary very much beguilement to say that hat divorce from misunderstanding, and not from the fact that sometimes love ends, and that.wars arise self-deception and nio from conflicting interests. From this to say that our wars are disinterested truth ant the wars of other are due to ignorance - like in the Middle West today -  is just a small step further.

Scetticismo (II)

Income inequality

I stumbled upon this post by Forbes. It would be funny if it were not tragic. In the end it says "When income and wealth inequality are growing, unease in our lives is shrinking". Of course "our lives" refers to the lives of billionaires, but  I remember that the years of highest income inequalities in the USA were 1929 and 2008, the years of collapse. Anyway, the problem is not that the rich says that his prosperity is the nation's prosperity. They always said so. The problem is that more and more poor people already believe the same.

Socialism, socialdemocracy, mixed economy

In the previous post I discussed the differences between socialdemocracy (Geramny, Sweden, Denmark) and mixed economy (Italy and Britain before 80s). The differences between them and with socialism can be phrased, anyway, in another way. In socialist economies, the lower classes take away all the wealth and property from the upper classes; in socialdemocracy lower classes take away part but not all of the property, in mixed economies the lower classes do not take anything from the upper classes, but develop a parallel, state-owned economy side by side with the free enterprise. Put in this way, mixed economies - such as that of Italy before 1989 - are far from socialism and vey close instead to liberal economies. It is therefore not suprising that the transition to fully liberist models happened so rapidly, in the 802 in Britain and ten years later in Italy.

Socialdemocracy and mixed economy

In Italy, and probably in other countries, the prestige of Germany is steadily rising. This is not surprising. Given the very good performances of this country in a period of heavy global depression. Nonetheless, I see that the economic model of Germany and other socialdemocracies is poorly understood. The “social model” of Europe – a “third way” between the pure liberism of the United States and the socialism of Soviet Union – had in fact two very different declensions: the socialdemocracy of Central Europe, and the mixed economy of Britain, Italy and partly France. Many believe that Italy has been fundamentally a socialist country, modelled after the Soviet Union, but our model was rather Britain and its mixed economy. The sanitary service, for instance, is cleary shaped after the British Sanitary Service.
Both socialdemocracies and mixed economies envisage strong state intervention in economy, but in a very different way. In socialdemocracies enterprise is almost exclusively private, but there is a strong, progressive taxation that redistribute wealth from the rich to the poor via a very developed network of universal social services. In mixed economies there are state enterprises that coexist with private enterprises and often represent a consistent fraction of national economy. In Italy the publicly hold IRI represented the largest enterprise in the country, but coexisted with other big corporations such as FIAT or Ansaldo. In Britain the fraction of publicly hold enterprises was perhaps even bigger. In mixed economies taxation is relatively low and not strongly progressive, and social services are present but less developed than in socialdemocracies. Somebody could say that taxation is Italy is very high, but, although in principle it is strongly progressive, in practice taxes are paid almost exclusively by the lower classes, given the existence of extensive fiscal evasion in the upper classes.
Today socialdemocracies not only survive but show very good economic performances. Mixed economies, with the exception of France, have disappeared: public enterprises have been sold and Britain and Italy have changed from a mixed socialist/liberist model, to an almost completely liberist economic model with a relatively well developed welfare (the persistence of a welfare system today is the main difference with USA). In Britain the transition to a liberist model happened in the early 80’s, while in Italy it is more recent and successive to the collapse of the Soviet Union.
It must be said that Prodi and Bersani had in mind to follow a German model and to transform Italy into a socialdemocracy, but their project failed largely because of the opposition of PD. The majority of former communist party in fact converted to liberism after 1989, and never considered the possibility of a socialdemocratic model, largely, I suspect, because of poor knowledge of the redistributive model of Central European economies. In Italy, before 1989, we had a conflict between socialism and liberism, and few knew exactly what happened in Sweden, Germany, Denmark.
