ciò che non siamo, ciò che non vogliamo

The ideas are the same that a few years later were put forward by Popper (and in fact Montale was influenced by Husserl's phylosophy); the difference is that for Montale this conscience of limits of knowledge is a failure, whereas for Popper and for scientists it is a success.
