When Christ said that "So the last shall be first, and the first last" he said something absolutely revolutionaru. Not only th various liberation movement of the Middle Ages and even more those of the last two centuries arise from this idea; but more importantly the Ancinet were highly hierarchical and classist, and believed that the upper class was endowed with pecuiliar virtues, like a divine origin. The ide that the first be last should have been absolutely sjocking.
Christ took this idea, not from social instances that are anuway deeplu rooterd ine arly Chsitinaism, and are taken from the social concern of the late hebraism, but from the Egyptian Hermetism; Egyptian hermetism had a huge inlfunece on the exoteric side of Chsi ideas and is widely presnet in Mt 20 from where the quote that givbe the title to this post is taken,.
