Crise, fall in the rate of return, and undercomsumption

Marx, in his book the Capital. predicted the collapse of capitalism on two ground. First, he stated that the rate of return will tend to fall as capitalism progress. This idea arouse from the observation that the returns were much higher in the XVI century than in the XIX and economists such as Ricardo or Smith agreed on this. Marx is innovative since he offered an explanation of this fall of returns: with scientific development, you need higher and higher investments to have the same return.
This idea of the falling rate of return was generally overlooked,. but was taken very seriously by the importan economist Schumpeter. He said that the fall of returns can be offset by innovation, which alters the organic composition of capital. We are in an age of general capitalist crissi, but return are faboulously high given the high rate of innovation due to infomration technologies.

The second mechanism pointed out by Marx is underconsumption. In the capitalist system, capitalist tend to pay labour force as little as possible, but this means that the base of consumer, which is composed mainly of laborer, shrinks progressively, leading to a crisis of underconsumption. The cires of 2009 was largely a crise of underconsumption.
The route to escape this contradiction was devised by John Maynard Keynes. If the economy as a whole ha a high rate of debt, debt compensates the low level of consumption. This trick worked wonderfully from 1945 to 2008, but, I dare say, it begins not to work any more. The level of public debts is astronomica in advanced countries, and begins to rise also in conutries licke China and Saudi Arabai, and there is probably a limit that cannot be trespeassed.

Anyway, it is amazing how the ideas of Marx have been taken  seriously by capitlamis economy, when they are usually dismissed as nonscientific in the divulgation.

Invasive species and xenophoby

The attitude of EU members has changed from a club open to the world to a scared community suspicious of migrants and aliens. Curiously, this change reflects also in the meaasures of nature conservation. On 1th January 2015 enetered into effect the directive on alien species, which obliges the EU members to fight aliens. There is much debate in the scientific community about invasivealien species, but a growing number of scientists is convinced that 1) they are not so dangerous as believed 2) the are almost impossible to eradicate once introdfuced. Mark Davis, an American ecologists, speaks even of "xenophoby" against IAE. Xenophoby against plant and animnals, xenophoby against people who flies from the wars in the Middle East and Africa.

Italian entrepreneurs and poor economic performance with respect to Portugal

I quote a quote of Zingales in the latest number of "The Economist": when I go to a meeting of young entrepreneurs in America I find young entrepreneurs. When I go to a meeting of young entrepreneurs in Italy I see trust-minded kids that are there because of their parents and not of their accomplishments. This is the miracle of Italy: a labour market that is verging to Britain, with the ruling class of Saudi Arabia. And of course the Saudis blame the workers for the extremely poor performance of Italiana economy (Last year growth was inferior to Portugal, notwithstanding the relatively good world economical conidtions-

Checco Zalone, marketinh, Renzi e autarchia.

In questo articolo Antonio Menna suggerisce che il gran successo dell'ultimo film di Checco Zalone sia un fenomeno di marketing studiato a tavolino. Fosse un fenomeno di marketing, si tratta di una decisione politica. In tutto il mondo vedono star wars, e noi invece vediamo Checco Zalone, che è stato praticamente imposto e non per una scelta commerciale (sono tutti e due film commerciali pompati spasmodicamente dalla macchina pubblicitaria) da parte di Berlusconi, ma per una scelta politica - di autarchia - di Renzi. Dopo una legge elettorale che ricorda moltissimo la legge Acerbo, dopo una riforma della scuola che ricorda moltissimo la riforma Gentile (la prima importante riforma del fascismo), adesso anche l'autarchia. Mi resta solo il dubbio se si tratti di un tratto personale di Renzi, che viene dal mondo dei bottegai e che quindi ha naturaliter qualcosa di fascista, o se c'è continuità con quelle forze oscure che a suo tempo hanno orchestrato la strategia della tensione e che erano il vero obiettivo di Pasolini negli ultimi 4-5 anni della sua vita. Non solo non ho prove, ma non ho neanche indizi.

Symbolism of flowers and death

In this "danse macabre" of the 15th century, what catches my eyes are the flowers in the ground.

In particular, it is interesting that they are the same represented in the basal part of the Deposition Borghese by Raphael: a plantain and a forget-me-not are clearly recognizable. There is also a species with pyramidal flowers which I cannot identify.

The Borghese Deposition is a painting of mourning, so both species are related to death: the forget-me-not to the remembrance od the death, and the plantain represent the "well trodden path" of the christian. It is interesting that the forget-me-not is represented with four petal, like the cross, and therefore in 15th century forget-me-not was not a Myosotis but a Crucifer. In the Borghese Deposition it seems to be Cardamine bulbifera (the flowers are easily identifiable, but the leaves do not correspond well). Probably after tjhe 15th century the name passed from Cardamine to Myosotis.

Euro, welfare, socialdemocrazie, mostri senza testa.

Se non fosse drammatica (pensiamo ai pensionati greci che non possono più pèermettersi le cure mediche), la storia recente dell'euro sarebbe comica. L'euro era stato inventato per salvare il welfare europeo (il welfare esiste solo in Europa, per lo meno in forma sviluppata) dalla competizione globale. E' andata a finire che per salvare l'euro stiamo buttando a mare il welfare, per ora nei Paesi del sud europa, ma penso in futuro anche in quelli del nord.

Senza ricorrere a spiegazioni cospirazionistiche, il problema è abbastanza semplice: una moneta che viene usata da centinaia di milioni di persone ha assoluto bisogno di una banca centrale, ma la banca centrale, pur nella sua indipendenza, deve avere dei principi ispiratori, che non possono non venire da un governo. In Amrica la Federal Reserve prende le direttive dalla Presidenza, in Europa la BCE non ha nessun governo di riferimento. A dire il vero un punto di riferimento cìè, ed è il governo tedesco, ma i tedeschi sono troppo isolazionisti (e troppo crucchi) per pensare a un terriotrio pià ampio della ottocentesce Zollverein, col risultato disastroso che abbiamo sotto gli occhi. Si noti che non discuto il problema se si debbano adottare politiche monetaristiche o keynesiane o il problema dellos trapotere delle banche: in un'economia altamente finanziarizzata è abbastanza inevitabile che si eviti il fallimento delle banche, il problema è che evitare il fallimento delle banche non può essere l'unico obiuettivo di politica economica

Politicamente, tra l'altro, le socialdemocrazie (proprio perché vedono nell'euro il baluardo del welfare), che sostengono a spada tratta questo mostro senza testa (l'euro appunto), si sono appiattite sui partiti di centro col risultato sostanzialmente di dissolversi - socialdemocrazie che in fono erano uscite benissimo dalla crisi dell'Unione Sovietica, non casualmente, perché erano alternative sia all'ultraliberismo sia però anche al modello sovietico. L'alternativa al mostro acefalo diventano i partiti populisti che spesso sono di ispirazione di estrema destra (vedi Le Pen, Grillo viene dall'area culturale democristiana anche se è molto atipico). Direzione tedesca senza idee + dissoluzione della socialdemocrazia + espansione vorticosa delle destre estreme stanno creando un'Europa sempre più nera e a un euro che per quanto acefalo fa una politica economica identica o quasi a quella delineata da Hitler nel Mein Kampf. Tsipraas aveva provato a creare un euro al servizio delle persone (invece di questo euro sul cui altare si fanno sacrifici umani) ed è stato fatto a pezzi dai tedeschi (ma anche da estoni, slovacchi ecc.).

Alla fine torna il problema dell'Europa politica, dato che l'Europa economica mi sembra orma irreversibile (con buona pace di Grillo che pure dice alcune cose interessanti). Forse la strada sarebbe fare una televisione europea. In fondo l'Italia si è unificata solamente quando la televisione ha fornito una lingua comune al Paese, 100 anni dopo l'unificazione m,anu militari da parte del Piemonte. All'Europa manca decisamente una lingua comune. L'aveva di più nel XIX secolo, in cui certi valori erano condivisi da tutti i Paesi europèi e la borghesia dialogava tranquillamente in francese e tedesco.

Renzi, Baricco, e il gattopardismo dei ceti parassitari

Baricco pare che sostenga con forza il rinnovamento generazionale condotto da Renzi. Probabilmente non si è accorto che il renzismo altro non è che il gattopardesco "tutto cambi perché nulla cambi". Quando, con fatica, l'Italia fu unificata, il gattopardismo permise alle aristocrazie parassitarie che dominavano gli staterelli italiani di rimanere saldamente al potere. Oggi, che ci troviamo, nel bene e nel male, di fronte all'unificazione europea, i ceti parassitari che hanno governato l'Italia durante la prima e seconda repubblica cercano - e probabilmente riusciranno - di salvarsi di nuovo. Direi che il caso del decreto salvabanche è emblematico: la logica non è il fallimento creerebbe il collasso finanziario come nel '29, il criterio è "il fallimento butterebbe sul lastrico i furbetti del quartierino" (anche se un minimo di considerazioni di politica economica ci sono).

Autorità e potere

Il potere sveglia, l'autorità rincoglionisce. Questo è vero per chi lo subisce, ma soprattutto per chi lo eseercita.

Islam, America, Russia and war

This war appears a war between Islam and the West, but is instead a war between America and Russia. Ant the fact that a war between the two main nuclear powers is impossible (hopefully at least), is the very reason why this war appears as a war between Islam and the Western Civiliaztion. I say America, but it would better to say between the group around McCain and the Russia. Mr Obama fiercely opposes the war.

Evolution of the Indo-European languages, phentics, cladistics and the scientific method

This video about the evolution of Indo-European languages deserves to be listened. It criticizes a paper on Science, based on the method of clustering analysis, which tries to find the origin of IndoEuropean languages. Although the criticism it presents is 95% (I will come back on this later), I found it rather irritating. The reason of this irriation became clear to me at minute 45.50 where says that the research on science is close to the method of creationsim, since, instead of looking for the theory explaining the facts, it looks for the facts which support the theory. But this is not the method of creationsim, it is the hypothetica-deductive method of science. The method of creationists is "I believe in hypothesi A, let's find the facts that falsify the alternative hypothesis", and the latter is exactly the approach of the video.

Going into more detail, there are two approaches for the reconstruction of the tree of languages. The historical linguistic or traditional approaches compares in detaill single words of the languages, whereas the clustering method compares thousands of words at the same time. The two are obviously complementary, but the supporters of historical linguistics (like the authors of the video) never accepted the numerical methods. Some criticism is nonetheless founded. The two approaches exist also in taxonomy: the numerical method is called phenetic, since it looks for overall similarity, whereas the historical linguistic method is called cladistic, and in the latter method only shared similarities, not overall similarity are considered (Actually cladistic was invested in linguistic earlier than in taxonomy). At minute 24.30 the difference between the two approaches is discussed without the author being aware, obviously, of the existence of the same problems in taxonomy. In fact, if two languages (or two species) are compared on the base of overall similarity and not strictly on shared similarity, they appear more related than they are actually: the overall similarity of dolphins and fishes is large, but they are completely unrelated. Cladistic methods have never been applied in linguistics, to my knowledge, and it could be ftruiful to try.

Concerning the dating of the origin of languages the criticism of the video is that the dates of the tree contradict a few historical facts and that it does not consider movement of people like the latins conquering the Mediterranean. It is sensible, but useless, since the only way to estimated the origin of languages or cluster of languages for which there is no historical record is to assume constant rate of evolution. It is a pire aller, but nothing better exists.

Costituzione, Corano, Renzi

Forse occorrerebbe ricordare a Renzi che viene anche prima di Confindustria.

Muccino e Pasolini

Umberto Eco una volta disse che si può anche dire che Dante era un cattivo poeta, ma solo dopo 50 pagine di fitta analisi testuale. Il problema di Muccino che critica Pasolini perché non ha tecnica cinematografica non è tanto un mediocre che critica un gigante, quanto che non c'è argomentazione, come nelle chiacchere da bar. Tra l'altro, è abbastanza divertente che non si sia accorto che il carattere naif della tecnica cinematografica di Pasolini, assai evidente, rientra pienamente nello stile delle ricerca artistiche di avanguardia del secondo dopoguerra, che disprezzano la tecnica, da Duchamp al punk.

Chi mistica mastica

Fino a qualche anno fa era facile incontrare, negli ampi prati della periferia di Roma, aree incolte residuali tra le varie speculazioni e lottizzazioni, raccoglitrici di erbe spontanee, di solito contadine inurbate dalle conoscenze botaniche raffinatissime. Oggi questo personaggio - la "cicoriara" - è scomparso, ma proprio adesso che la sapienza contadina si è persa, sta dilagando la moda delle misticanze, queste insalate di erbe selvatiche gustosissime. Su facebook si trova per esempio un bel gruppo, a cui mi piace fare pubblicità, detto "erbe spontanee mangerecce". La coincidenza tra la scomparsa della tradizione e la riscoperta, di solito da persone di estrazione piccolo borghese, non è casuale, e fa parte della riscoperta del mondo contadino. Si tratta di qualcosa di abbastanza esteriore, ma speriamo che a qualcosa serva.

Unequality, economy and reward

Unequalities of income have reached an unprecedented level in the US, and, although this distortion is generally not questioned, a few critical voices are beginning to rise.

This video is an equilibrated discussion of the topic. It states that high unequalities are related to poor economical performance. In a nutshell, this is the second book of "The Capital", but I don't want to discuss the economical facet of the question. I would better address the ethical aspect of unequality. Supporters, claim that unequalities are healthy, since they prvide a reward for the skilled and the enterprising. This is maybe true, but provided that unequalities do not presresent an impassable barrier. When the unequalities are exaggerated, they become impassable, and we are no longer in an open society, but in a society of castes.

Cucina, avanguardie artistiche e estetizzazione della vita

In Italia, la centralità ,per non dire l'ossessione, del cibo non è certo nuova, però recente è la divizzazione degli chef, che sono diventate delle vere star. In parte è una moda, in parte è segno del raggiunto benessere (tanti che una volta si potevano permettere al massimo pane e mortadella oggi possono togliersi lo sfizio di un buon risotrante), però in parte è un fenomeno più profondo e generale, quello dell'estetizzazione della vita. Fare della vita un'opera d'arte, idea nata nel XIX secolo, è forse il motivo conduttore di tutta l'arte moderna, dagli arts and crafts al Bauhaus alla Soziale Plastik di Beuys. E il programma, sperimentato dalle avanguardie, ha avuto uno straordinario successo. Siamo circondati da oggetti materiali e immateriali (per esempio i video) informati dalla ricerche estetiche delle avanguardie. Il cinema per esempio è stato profondamente influenzato dal cubismo. E la cucina non fa eccezione.
