This paper from "Nature" shows, on the base of a huge dataaset, that tropical tre species follow a very common pattern, that is that few species account for mosy ot of the number of individuals and that rare species account for most of the species. Since the percentage of hyperodminant treees is only 2% of the species these merry ecologists suggest that it is enough to contentrate on these common species to undertand ecological process
they are probably unaware that more or less the same pattern occurs in language. with few words accounting for most of the occurrencies in the texts; and I thinl that nobody thinks that to understand the functioning of language it is enough to concentrate on the most common words. More I progress in the knoledge of science and more I am aware that scientists are often completely lacking critical thinking, even the more brilliant among them
