I watched a SciShow video on you tube that proposed an interesting parallelism between the search of the philosopher stone in Alchemy and the search for the unification of graviity and the other forces of nature in physics. Alchemy was based on flawed foundations although the experimentations of alchemists led to a lot of important chemistry; maybe also the foundations of our physics are fundamentally flawed?
Another parallelism that I find is that modern physics books are no less obscure than an alchemy text. Of course there is fundamental difference,. the Alchemists didn't want to be understood whereas the difficulty of modern physics lies in the extreme difficulty of the mathematical formalism, but also this parallelism is maybe suggestive.
