Some time ago I saw picture of paintings of the Sahara. One depicted a big dotted bull, but instead of dots it had spirals. Spirals are probably a widespread symbol of stas (I will discuss this topic elsewhere), and therefore I suspect that the bull represented the vault of the night sky. As a matter of fact, I remember a Egyptian statue of the bull Apis with a mantle of stars (but I cannot retrieve it). And recently I found out in this interesting site, who states that the aurochs in the Lascaux cave are a representation of the constellation of the Taurus (more probably of the sky at the moment of the autumn equinox).
